<item><title><![CDATA[Injured Airman reunites with family just 4 days after IED attack]]></title>

Brian Williams, deployed from the 87th Security Forces Squadron here, suffered serious injuries after an improvised explosive device detonated while he was on a mission April 25 outside Kandahar Airfield in southern Afghanistan.<br />

Williams, who is a military working dog handler, was transported to the KAF trauma center that same day where he underwent the first of several surgeries on his left leg. <br />
Approximately 120,000 people crowded onto the base's airfield to witness aerial stunts and ground displays including demonstrations by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds F-16 Fighting Falcons and the U.S. Army Golden Knight parachute team.<br />

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Turning an active runway into a mile-long air stage overnight may seem like a daunting task, but it's all in a day's work for members of the 87th Civil Engineer Squadron who will be doing just that prior to the air show scheduled for May 12 and 13.<br />

<content:encoded><![CDATA[The Air Force's two Contingency Response Wings will join forces in a ceremony May 29 at Travis Air Force Base, Calif.<br />
<br />
As part of the U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center's restructuring plan announced by Air Mobility Command Nov. 2, 2011, the 615th Contingency Response Wing at Travis AFB, will be inactivated and its subordinate groups will align under the command of the 621st CRW, based here. <br />
<br />

This type of "train-the-trainer" event allows the 174th Inf. Bde's trainers to stay current on the tactics, techniques and procedures they relay to service members preparing for deployment.<br />

Representatives Frank Horton and Norman Y. Mineta introduced a resolution to the House of Representatives in June 1977 calling upon the president to proclaim the first ten days of May as Asian and Pacific Heritage Week. A month later, Senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga introduced a similar bill in the Senate. <content:encoded><![CDATA[Rawsi Williams, a famous nurse and keynote speaker once said, "To do what nobody else will do, a way that nobody else can do, in spite of all we go through; is to be a nurse." The 87th Medical Group invites the joint base community to join them in celebrating nurses and medical technicians during National Nurses Week from May 6 through 12.<br />
<br />
National recognition for nurses first started as a one day celebration in 1974. A week was set aside to show appreciation for these professionals who dedicate themselves to a life of serving others by 1991. <content:encoded><![CDATA[The 87th Medical Group health officials encourage members of the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst community to receive the chickenpox vaccine to help reduce the severity of the illness or prevent it all together.<br />
<br />
Chickenpox, also known as varicella, is a highly contagious disease that can cause discomfort and can - albeit rarely - result in death. The illness typically lasts for three to seven days and is preventable through a vaccination.<br />
<br />
The two-part vaccine is made from a weakened varicella virus that produces an immune response in the body protecting it from chickenpox. The New Jersey Army National Guard unit's firing of 105mm cannons is scheduled to cease by 11 p.m. each day.<br />
<br />
This training is essential and helps to ensure the readiness of America's fighting force. As a result of this important training, some residents may hear more noise than usual coming from our ranges and may experience possible ground shaking. The march, which started at One World Trade Center and ended at the Air Advisor Academy, was in remembrance of the deaths of nine U.S. air advisors in Afghanistan.<br />
<br />
On the morning of April 27, 2011, an Afghan Air Force lieutenant colonel walked into the Afghan Air Command and Control Center at the Kabul Air Command Headquarters and, without warning or provocation, opened fire, killing eight active-duty U.S. Airmen and a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel. Jones learned April 19 that he was among the 2011 Thomas Jefferson Award winners. The competition is the premiere Department of Defense awards program for print and broadcast journalism with winners representing the elite communicators in DOD.<br />

The Defense Information School&#160;at Fort Meade, Md., will provide plaques and certificates of achievement for individual and unit awards. Adolf Hitler set out to exterminate all Jewish people, gypsies, the handicapped, homosexuals, political dissidents and Russians during World War II. He succeeded in wiping out more than six million Jewish people and millions more from the other targeted groups before his own demise in 1945.<br />
<br />

<br />
Of course, at the time I had absolutely no clue how truly involved I would become.<br />
<br />
I work as a public affairs specialist for the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Public Affairs office. When I was told I would be playing an Associated Press embedded journalist, I thought how unique of an experience this could turn out to be. PA specialists are trained to work with civilian media but are rarely afforded a chance to act like one. <content:encoded><![CDATA[The 99th Regional Support Command has been named the overall Army Reserve winner in the 2012 Army Communities of Excellence competition.<br />
<br />
This win follows a second-place finish for the 99th RSC in its first year of ACOE competition in 2011.<br />
<br />
"This was due to the fantastic work and commitment to serve soldiers and families by every member of our team," said Dr. Mikey Kloster, 99th RSC chief of staff.<br />

Hundreds of security forces personnel and augmentees will patrol parking areas and entry control points as well as assist with crowd control at the event.<br />
